Help with your gambling session diary

Logging sessions

  • Start a session now vs. log a finished one: Tap + in the Diary. “Start a session now” records the start time while you play; open it later and tap End session to add what you left with. “Log a finished session” is for entering one after the fact. The app notes when each entry was logged, and entries made during or right after a session carry the most weight.
  • Picking the casino: In a new session, tap the magnifying glass next to the casino name. Search the built-in list of US casinos by name, city, or state, pick one of your saved venues, or tap Find casinos near me to sort by distance (this asks for location permission once; your location isn't stored or sent to us). Online sportsbooks and places that aren't listed can be typed in.
  • What the IRS asks for: the date and type of wager, the establishment's name and address, the names of others present, and the amount won or lost. If you were alone, tap Alone.
  • One game per session: If you switch from slots to blackjack, start a new session. Sessions that run past midnight are flagged, because the IRS session rule for slots ends a session with the calendar day.
  • Tickets, jackpots, and markers: Open a session to add bet slips and tickets, hand-paid jackpots (with time and machine), and casino markers (pit or cage). Add photos of tickets, receipts, and ATM slips there too.

W-2Gs, statements, and expenses

  • Adding a W-2G: Open the session you won it in and tap Add W-2G for this session, then copy the boxes exactly as printed. If the casino combined several jackpots from one gaming day onto one form, link each of those sessions.
  • “W-2G winnings are larger than the net gain of their sessions”: This happens when you hit a jackpot but finished the session down. The Tax Year screen and the PDF show both ways to report it. The choice is your tax preparer's.
  • Casino win/loss statements: Tax Year → Casino & online statements. The export compares them with your diary at each venue. Differences are normal, because casinos only see player's-card play.
  • Expenses: Tax Year → Expenses, for travel and hotels. They're kept separate from gambling losses, and your preparer decides whether they count.

Editing and deleting

  • Why does an edit need a reason? A diary kept at the time is worth more than one rebuilt later. Each change is saved with its date, time, and reason, and shows in your export, so it's clear nothing was quietly rewritten.
  • Deleted sessions: They leave your diary and totals but stay listed in the export. Restore one from Settings → Deleted sessions.

Export and your tax return

  • Export: Tax Year → Export PDF diary, or CSV files for your CPA. Set the name printed on the diary in Settings.
  • The 90% limit: From tax year 2026, only 90% of gambling losses are deductible, and never more than your winnings. Losses count only if you itemize. If the law changes for a year, adjust it in Settings → Loss deduction limit.
  • Married filing jointly: Turn it on in Settings to mark who played each session. The limit applies to your combined losses and winnings.

Pro and purchases

  • Free vs. Pro: Free diaries hold 10 sessions per tax year. Pro adds unlimited sessions and PDF/CSV export, either for one tax year or for every year with Lifetime.
  • Restore Pro: Settings → Restore purchases. Purchases are tied to your Apple ID.
  • Refunds: Handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Face ID lock

Settings → Security → Require Face ID locks the app whenever you leave it and hides it in the app switcher. If Face ID doesn't recognize you, use your device passcode. To turn it off, unlock the app and switch it off in the same place.

Keeping your records safe

iCloud sync: Turn it on in Settings → iCloud to keep your diary on all your devices and backed up in your own iCloud. It needs you to be signed in to iCloud. We can't see your records either way.

Without iCloud sync, your diary lives only on this device and we can't recover it for you. Export a PDF every month or two and keep it with your tax papers. Your iPhone's iCloud or computer backup also includes the app's data.
